Furniture 2+2: Storage and Enclosure
Problem:
Design and build a furniture prototype that includes storage, focusing on its two essential parts: the container and its support. Explore how a piece both displays and protects an object.
Response:
I attempted to distill the piece into its essential components: a storage piece and its enclosure. Using a combination of precise, modern, digital fabrication techniques and an ancient, organic method of steam-bending white oak laths, I suspended a simple storage box inside a free-flowing skin that protects and highlights its contents.
Process:
- Ergonomic Studies
- Form Exploration in Clay
- Form Exploration in Rhino/Grasshopper
- Digital Fabrication MDF Skeleton
- Application of Steam-Bent White Oak Skin
- Installation of Birch Storage Component
