U.C.S.B. Art Museum

Problem:

The University of California at Santa Barbara is adding an art museum to its campus. Occupying a waterfront site at the edge of campus, the museum must accomodate permanent and traveling exhibits while making a connection between the existing university and its coastal setting.

Response:

I sought to highlight the timeless nature of the site by designing a building that emerges from the existing hillside, referencing the geological interplay of sea and stoned that has sculpted Santa Barbara as we know it. Galleries are connected by a central axis that frames views of the San Juan Mountains at one terminus and the Pacific Ocean at the other.

Program:

  • Flexible Gallery Spaces
  • Administrative Offices
  • Support Spaces (Storage, Loading, Etc.)
  • Cafe
